1 Big Reason Why You Should Clip Coupons!

Earlier this week, Amy Fontinelle wrote an article titled "8 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Use Coupons." Intrigued, I decided to read on....

Who really could argue against using coupons for groceries and other items that one uses on a daily basis?? See below for her list of reasons (and my rebuttal).

1. You have to buy a newspaper.
No, you actually don't have to. If you work in an office building, check the recycling on Monday to see if you can get coupons for free. Many people purchase papers and then do not use the coupons. Even if you do have to buy a paper, the price is minimal compared to what you will save. Here in Houston, the Sunday paper is $2. One coupon alone will cover that small cost.

2. Clipping coupons takes time.
True, but you can cut down on the time it takes to clip them. Clip coupons while you are doing other activities - like watching TV. Or you can skip clipping all together and create a coupon binder organized by date.

3. Getting a paper invites lots of other advertising into your home.
Not if you throw out the other items.

4. Many of the coupons will be for things you neither need or want.
Very true. Throw the rest out. Don't clip them.... just toss them. I clip coupons that I know we will use and diaper coupons for my sister-in-law. The rest go in the trash.

5. Grocery coupons tempt you to spend money on things that you shouldn't
Grocery stores do that too! Coupons help you save money on the items you are already purchasing.... period!

6. The same coupons tend to be offered over and over again.
Sure, Activia yogurt coupons are very common - and guess what, we use every coupon for Activia that we have. Each paper has different coupons, and usually offer new item coupons.

7. You might become a slave to coupons.
The author's point here is that once you know how much you can get an item for, you will refuse to pay more for it. Point taken. I'm definitely guilty of this. It is very easy to get sucked into the discount world and use all of your free time couponing. If this is your hobby and it isn't taking time away from family life - great! We all have to try to not become coupon addicts! Even I have to limit the time that I blog about great deals (about an hour a day).

8. Shopping takes longer.
Not if you go in with a plan and the coupons that you are going to use.

And now.... for my 1 big reason to use coupons: It will save you money!!! Who couldn't use a little extra dough?
